Gifts will be matched dollar for dollar
An estimated 3 million people have been impacted by the destructive wind and life-threatening flooding caused by the devastating back-to-back hurricanes Eta and Iota. The swath of destruction has left thousands of families in Latin American and the Caribbean homeless, making an already life-threatening situation worse for children and families like Maria’s in Honduras.
“The difficulties are constant,” she said, “and I don’t have the means to make a better home. My house is not secure, not safe.”
Her house is a small shack of rotting wood planks, a dirt floor and a roof with a gaping hole in it.
“I keep reinforcing the house as best as I can when I can find pieces of nylon or cardboard,” Maria said. “Water gets inside, and I really need the house for my children. If God sends me a home, it will be a great blessing from Him.”
On dark, rainy nights when her children get scared, Maria gathers them all together, hugging them close. As the rain pours through the roof and the floor turns to mud, they turn to prayer, asking God that all will be well.
“We listen to the rain and I will read them the Bible, thinking someday perhaps we can have something better,” she said.
As part of our Giving Tuesday fundraising effort, our goal is to raise funds to provide homes for families like Maria’s. “Even though it’s a humble home, I clean it every day so that they can live in a clean house. Right now that we haven’t had water, we focus on finding water to shower or we find a place where we can go and shower. I also focus on finding work.” said Maria in Honduras, a single mother in Honduras struggling to provide for her children.
