Colombia Poverty Facts

According to the assessment, 30% of the Colombian population is food insecure, which means that 15.5 million people do not have sufficient access to food and face difficulties covering their basic needs, 2.1 million are severely food insecure and 13.4 million are moderately food insecure. Food security is a critical need in Colombia, according to the United Nations World Food Programme.
The World Food Programme anticipates food insecurity to deteriorate further “over the coming months due to a combination of political instability, economic challenges and the ongoing impact of the regional migratory crisis amplified by internal displacement.”
According to the 2022 Humanitarian Needs Overview, 7.3 million Colombians are food insecure and in need of food assistance, or about 14 percent of the population.
Currently, the minimum salary in Colombia is approximately $256. For a family of at least four with a breadwinner earning the minimum salary, $160 is needed for basic food baskets, leaving a family of four $96 to spend on other necessities.
The average monthly cost of a food basket for one person in 2020 increased to $291.80, according to the Consumer Protection and Competition Authority, Acoeco. For a family of four or more with one breadwinner, it is impossible for a family to live a healthy, dignified life.

Help for Colombia

In 2019, FFTP formed a partnership with Minuto de Dios, a Colombian nonprofit that for more than 60 years has provided counseling, job training and homes to families living in poverty. Together, FFTP and Minuto de Dios have been helping the tens of thousands of Venezuelan migrants who have fled their home country to escape shortages of food, water, and medicine, and ultimately achieve a better life in Colombia.

Housing

The Palma Real Sustainable Community Development Project in Granada has 60 three-bedroom houses with clean water, sanitation, and electricity. In 2023, FFTP built 55 homes for a total of 756 since inception.

Water

Two clean water projects are benefiting 1,174 families in the communities of Charco Trece, Meta and La Guajira.

Food

We are working with Minuto de Dios and Order of Malta in two nutrition programs, helping 1,500 newborns and children recover from acute malnutrition.

Education

To combat inflation, we are teaching many Colombian families how to grow their own gardens by providing them technical training and basic tools.

Medicine

Medical facilities answer an unmet need for those in areas where care is unaffordable.

Emergency aid

Disasters like earthquakes, COVID, and political unrest are met with vital supplies.

Children

Vulnerable children without families have shelter, education, and are receiving loving care.

Sustainability

The City of God Entrenubes Sustainable Development Project has spaces for social development, income-generating activities and training.

Community Support

A new Integral Development Center in Palma Real will provide social development, income-generating activities, and training.

Micro-Finance

Understanding the importance of supporting micro-businesses, FFTP is providing support to Venezuelan migrant care centers throughout Colombia.

Delivered the final 20 homes of the Palma Real Sustainable Community Development, which includes a total of 60 homes.

Inaugurated Ciudad de Dios Entrenubes, which means City of God Between the Clouds. In all, 72 families will be part of this high-rise community that gets its name from its location near the mountainside. The Order of Malta Foundation in Colombia worked with FFTP and another partner, Fundación Construimos, which built the multistory apartment building.

Established partnership with Acceso, which helps smallholder farmers who earn less than $5 a day bring their products to the marketplace.

With FFTP, Acceso will add six more community training farms over the next 18 months, impacting 170 vulnerable women and youth, as well as 500-plus surrounding farmers.
