INSUFFICIENT INCOME IN GUATEMALA CITY
Guatemala City is the capital and largest city in Guatemala, with a population of about one million, while its urban area and surrounding communities amount to five million. 60% of the metropolitan live in poverty due to low wages resulting in insufficient income. The situation is worsened by people leaving rural areas to live in the city.
A Second Income for the Household
Many women in these communities are dedicated to household chores and childcare and depend economically on their husbands. Although many want to help improve their household incomes, their circumstances limit their options.
Creating a Sustainable Income
We created The Empowering Women Through Sewing Project to help women in communities around Guatemala City learn and improve their sewing skills so they can make products to sell and earn a sustainable income. The project provided the equipment and materials needed for women's training centers. The training centers' principal goal is to strengthen the abilities and capacities of women aged 18 and older who live in marginal areas and lack employment and economic development opportunities.
