Family and Friends Help Piqua Native to Build Homes in Haiti
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (May 23, 2018) Visions of a new life soon will become a reality for 50 families living in unimaginable conditions in Savann Kabrit, Haiti. Thanks to the fundraising efforts of Ben and Louise Scott, the Boca Grande Hope For Haitians Committee and generous donors in Piqua, Ohio, 50 homes will be built through Food For The Poor by the end of summer.
Piqua native Ben Scott and his family set the ball in motion for the 50 homes by hosting a hometown reception on Dec. 5, 2017, at the Piqua Country Club, where the goal for the first dozen homes was met.
“None of what we do would be possible without our supporters and the Hope For Haitians Committee that has encouraged Boca Grande residents to support our projects in Haiti,” Scott said. “This is a great blessing from our Lord, knowing that we are pleasing Him by loving our neighbors.”
Ben and Louise, Chairpersons of Boca Grande Hope For Haitians, were honored by Food For The Poor with the Ambassadors For The Poor Award on Feb. 6, 2018. The Scotts received the award at the ninth annual Boca Grande Hope For Haitians cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception at the Gasparilla Inn Beach Club in Boca Grande, Fla.
“It’s nice that Food For The Poor has recognized Louise and me, because they are a phenomenal organization that accomplishes so much in the 17 countries where they serve,” Scott said.
The Scotts began building homes with the Boca Grande Hope For Haitians Committee through the charity in 2009. Once the construction of the 50 homes in Savann Kabrit is completed, the couple and their committee will have built more than 350 homes throughout the Caribbean nation.
“Their latest project of 50 homes in the remote area of Savann Kabrit will be a life-transforming gift for these families,” said Food For The Poor Executive Director Angel Aloma. “Every day, the men, women and children there are forced to stare poverty in the face, while still trying to recover from the effects of Hurricane Matthew that hit Haiti in October 2016. Ben, Louise and the Hope For Haitians Committee are an answer to prayer and they are making a tremendous impact in Haiti. We are thankful for all that they’re doing to renew hope for the poor in Haiti.”
Committee members include: Chairpersons Ben and Louise Scott, the Rev. Gary Beatty, the Rev. Jerome Carosella, the Rev. Michelle Robertshaw, the Rev. Matthew M. Williams, Henry and Ginny Bryant, George and Lois Castrucci, Patricia Chapman, John Denneen, Charlie and Florita Field, Lou and Corie Fusz, Jim and Linda Grant, Stephen and Susan Jansen, Tom and Nancy Lorden, Sue Sligar, and Peter and Elsa Soderberg.
