FFTP Mobilizes Relief Efforts in Honduras Following Devastating Tropical Storm Sara
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Nov. 18, 2024) – Food For The Poor (FFTP) and partner CEPUDO are responding to Tropical Storm Sara in Honduras, which has caused widespread devastation due to torrential rainfall and severe flooding. The slow-moving storm dumped more than two feet of rain across the region, displacing thousands and isolating entire communities.
Key Impacts:
- •Community Impact: Nearly 1,800 communities have been cut off by flooding.
- •Human Toll: More than 123,000 people have been affected, with two deaths reported.
- •Infrastructure Damage: Nine bridges were destroyed and 19 others damaged. Landslides have made several highways impassable.
- •Homes: More than 3,200 homes were damaged and more than 200 completely destroyed.
How FFTP and CEPUDO Are Responding:
- •Rescue Missions: FFTP volunteer teams utilized fishing boats to rescue flood-stranded families in La Flora de Cuba.
- •Food Relief: Donated staples such as rice, beans, lentils, and canned goods to community kitchens preparing meals for shelters in San Pedro Sula.
- •Essential Supplies: Partnered with in-country organization CEPUDO to distribute food, relief kits, and chainsaws to aid firefighters clearing debris.
FFTP President/CEO Ed Raine emphasized the organization’s commitment to providing critical aid.
“We are inspired by the resilience of the Honduran people and the dedication of our teams on the ground,” Raine said. “With the support of our in-country partner CEPUDO and donors, we are working tirelessly to ensure that families receive the assistance they need to recover.”
