Media Alert: FFTP Responds to Those in Path of Kentucky Tornadoes
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Dec. 13, 2021) Food For The Poor is responding to the needs of people in Kentucky affected by tornadoes that tore through the state, leaving a path of destruction with at least 64 dead and more than 100 still missing as of midday today. FFTP is working with the Diocese of Owensboro Kentucky and disaster relief partners MAP International, Midwest Mission Distribution Center, and Liquid IV to send disaster relief items to Mayfield, Ky., where many residents may be without power and running water for at least a month.
Early today, FFTP began mobilizing to send desperately needed items to people displaced or living in unsafe conditions as they begin the long recovery effort. Items prepared for shipment include generators, hygiene kits, blankets, cleaning supplies, toilet paper, school activity kits for children, soccer balls, baby sweaters, baby formula, wipes, personal care products, and other necessities requested by the diocese.
FFTP speaker Ken Mitchell and his wife, Jan, who live south of Louisville, took refuge in their bedroom walk-in closet when the tornado warning sounded. They remained in the closet for 45 minutes as rain pummeled their home. “The only thing we could do was pray,” he said. “It seemed like it took forever for the storm to pass.”
Mitchell and his family emerged from the closet safe and their property undamaged, he said, adding that he is praying for the people of Mayfield, about two hours away. During a regularly scheduled FFTP prayer service this Wednesday, Mitchell will lead the charity’s employees via Zoom in prayer for those affected by the tornadoes. Those who wish to make a donation in support of FFTP’s relief efforts may do so at: www.FoodForThePoor.org/kentucky.
