Media Alert: Food For The Poor Sends Critical Supplies to Haiti and D.R. in wake of T.S. Laura
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Aug. 25, 2020) Food For The Poor is responding to an urgent need for aid by airfreighting two disaster relief kits to Haiti and the Dominican Republic to help families recovering from extensive flooding caused by Tropical Storm Laura.
Each disaster kit contains essential items such as food, blankets, tarps, portable stoves, cleaning supplies and bandages.
The charity will follow that with 10 tractor-trailer loads of relief items — six to the FFTP-Haiti warehouse in Port-au-Prince and four to the D.R., where partners Fundacion Cruz Jiminian and the Order of Malta will oversee distribution.
Items in those shipments will include personal care products, soap, blankets, clothing and tarps provided by longtime partners Matthew 25: Ministries and Jezreel International. Matthew 25: Ministries and MAP International, another longtime charity partner, provided the items for the disaster kits.
Tropical Storm Laura is being blamed in news reports for the deaths of at least 13 people, including nine in Haiti and four in the D.R., while knocking out power and causing flooding and landslides in the two nations that share the island of Hispaniola.
Photos sent by one of the charity’s partners in the D.R. show flood waters taking over residential streets and some roads washed away, leaving some residents isolated. Videos from Haiti show streets turned into raging rivers.
“The images of devastation caused by the torrential rainfall and landslides are horrifying,” said Food For The Poor President/CEO Ed Raine. “We’re grateful for our generous donors and partners who are allowing us to respond immediately and come to the aid of these families, many of whom were already struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
In addition to pre-positioning supplies each hurricane season, FFTP organizes disaster relief kits with essential items that can be airfreighted and distributed within days to families affected in any of the countries served by the charity. FFTP also is on alert as the storm nears the Gulf Coast of the United States to determine how best to respond.
