FFTP Keeps Warehouse Open on Saturday for Haiti Donations

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Aug. 19, 2021) Food For The Poor is accepting canned goods and first aid items at its Coconut Creek warehouse for the next two Saturdays to help families in Haiti suffering from the recent earthquake and Tropical Storm Grace.

Residents can drop off those goods from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. the next two Saturdays. The Saturday hours are in addition to the regular drop-off hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

Visitors dropping off goods should follow the signs to the warehouse and pop open their trunks once they reach the drop-off area, where volunteers will be ready to assist with unloading.

Haiti already was in an extreme crisis before the earthquake, due to civil unrest and gang violence, the assassination of the president and a surge in COVID-19. The charity now is anticipating even greater needs for months to come.

As many as 1 million have been affected by the double hit of the quake and the tropical storm in Haiti’s southern peninsula.

Some of those left homeless were moved immediately to shelter in newly finished FFTP homes, including 10 in Nan Dominque, 10 in Cavaillon and seven in Ducis.

A technical team from FFTP-Haiti visited the southern area earlier this week to assess housing built by the charity, old and new.

Bishop Oge Beauvoir, Executive Director of FFTP-Haiti, said many people were living on the streets with no protection from Grace’s torrential rains earlier this week.

“It has been a nightmare for many Haitians,” Beauvoir said. “We give thanks for the provision of these homes and the material goods that are being sent to help these families, but also for providing spiritual resources to us by praying for us.”

FFTP is the largest nongovernmental organization working in Haiti since 1985 with 400 staff in the country, two warehouses, 12 distribution centers and 3,000 distribution end points.

To date, the charity has deployed 20 truckloads of aid with approximately 600,000 pounds of critical food, prepositioned disaster kits and medical supplies to Nippes, Sud and Grand’Anse departments.

Today, another convoy of trucks carrying essential goods was on the way to Jeremie and Nippes.

“We were already providing aid to 700,000 people on a regular basis before the quake and storm. The need for help is even more desperate now,” FFTP President/CEO Ed Raine said. “It is a blessing that we are able to provide shelter for families who lost everything with these just-finished homes, but we know much more needs to be done. This is not a short-term relief response. We are looking at every possible way we can help Haiti rebuild.”

FFTP has 99 containers either en route or already in the port in Haiti. Sixty-four of those containers contain food, primarily rice from the Republic of China (Taiwan) and MannaPack rice meals.

Seventeen more containers will be picked up at various points in the United States over the next two weeks.
