Food For The Poor Observes National Day of Prayer on May 4

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (May 1, 2023) Food For The Poor (FFTP) will observe the National Day of Prayer with a special one-hour prayer service on Thursday, May 4.

The service will include scripture readings, songs and prayers. It will coincide with the charity’s weekly Thankful Thursday service in the prayer room of its Coconut Creek headquarters.

Special prayer will be by Pastor Arthur Connor Jr., of the Metropolitan Baptist Church, and President of the Broward Baptist Association. Saxophonist Godson Pierre will perform.

Local officials expected to attend include Tamarac Mayor Michelle J. Gomez, Lauderhill Mayor Ken Thurston, Coral Springs Mayor Scott Brook and Coconut Creek Vice Mayor Sandra L. Welch.

The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Harry Truman. In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Ronald Reagan, designating the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May.

The theme for the 2023 National Day of Prayer is derived from James 5:16: “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”

In 2021, FFTP introduced a new logo with the cross, inspired by the Christian mission of the charity and by FFTP’s President/CEO Ed Raine.

“As a Christian ministry, prayer is at the front and center of all that we do,” Raine said. “We invite everyone to pray with us.”

Food For The Poor, one of the largest international relief and development organizations in the nation, does much more than feed millions of hungry children and families living in poverty primarily in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America.
