Summer Camp with a Purpose, Children Experience the Joy of Giving Back
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (July 26, 2017) On Tuesday, more than 100 children 4 to 12 years old, took time out of their summer camp activities with G3 America Martial Arts in Tamarac, Fla., to visit Food For The Poor and present the gift of a home for the poor.
The money they saved over the summer will provide a home for a family in Bas Limbé, Haiti, which is about 30 minutes west of Cap-Haitien.
The children, who were excited by seeing images of other children along the organization’s walls, learned how their gift will be used to help a family in need as they toured the headquarters in Coconut Creek, Fla.
“These students are learning more than martial arts, they are learning the importance of giving back and how they too are blessed when they help others,” said Lucas Rodrigues, Founder and Instructor of America Martial Arts. “I was telling the kids this morning that maybe one day we’ll build a village.”
Rodrigues and his wife Caroline are originally from São Paulo, Brazil. They have two young sons and started G3 America Martial Arts five years ago. Over the last four years, students who participated in their 10 week summer camp have been encouraged to donate their pocket change to help the less fortunate.
Many of the parents, moved by the actions of their children, also contributed toward this year’s summer camp goal of building a home in Haiti.
“It’s always touching to see the spirit of giving through the eyes of a child. The ‘We Pledge 100 Limbé Community Development Project’ is designed to improve the lives of 50 families with the most urgent needs in the village of Ti Guinen in Bas Limbé,” said Robin Mahfood, President/CEO of Food For The Poor. “Their donation for a new home will be a priceless blessing for one of these families and may God bless these children and Mr. Rodrigues for their generosity.”
Food For The Poor, one of the largest international relief and development organizations in the nation, does much more than feed millions of the hungry poor primarily in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. This interdenominational Christian ministry provides emergency relief assistance, clean water, medicines, educational materials, homes, support for orphans and the aged, skills training and micro-enterprise development assistance. Over the last 10 years, fundraising and other administrative costs averaged less than 5 percent of our expenses; more than 95 percent of all donations went directly to programs that help the poor.
