Twelve-Year-Old to Hold Second Annual Golf Tournament in West Palm Beach
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (April 18, 2017) High hopes for a new project has inspired local golfing talent Rafe Cochran to host his second annual charity golf tournament on Saturday, April 22, in West Palm Beach.
“My expectation for this year’s event is to raise over $50,000 and to bring awareness to people about Food For The Poor, and the school I am building in Jamaica,” said Rafe. “I want people to have fun at my event while raising money and awareness.”
Rafe and his parents, Jay and Diahann, visited Chester Primary and Infant School in St. Ann, Jamaica, in March with the charity. The school needs repairs and is severely overcrowded because the 3-to-5 year-old students are sharing the school with elementary and middle school students. Rafe’s gift will build a much needed building for the younger students.
“This gift of a school will be a much appreciated and beautiful present for these children, this is really special, because the giver isn’t that much older than they are,” said Angel Aloma, Executive Director of Food For The Poor. “I am truly amazed by this young man’s zeal. Rafe has love for his sport, deep appreciation for education and he’s passionate about helping others. This is rare at any age, but for a sixth-grader to possess such qualities is indeed amazing.”
Rafe, 12, began making a name in the golfing world at the age of 6. When he was 9, he became one of Food For The Poor’s youngest donors using his skills on the links to raise money to build nine homes in Haiti over the years.
“You’re never too young to take action, and I truly want to keep making a difference in the world,” said Rafe. “Building a better school with better conditions will help these children achieve their goals. I enjoyed meeting all the kids, speaking with them, playing soccer and running rely races. It was such a rewarding experience. At the end of the day we may be from different backgrounds, but we are all the same, just kids wanting to have fun and learn.”
The Second Annual Rafe Cochran Golf Classic will start at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 22, at the Mayacoo Lakes Country Club, 9697 Mayacoo Club Dr., West Palm Beach. Registration and a light lunch start at 11:30 a.m. on the day of the event.
