United Way, UAW Donate Trucks for Haiti
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (July 6, 2010) –United Way Worldwide, United Way for Southeastern Michigan and the United Auto Workers have donated four trucks to Food For The Poor. The trucks will be used to deliver lifesaving food, medicine and critically needed housing supplies in Haiti.
Since the Jan. 12 earthquake, rubble has made the roads even harder to navigate and driving conditions are very dangerous, with some people with children living in tents on medians on busy streets. The trucks will be used to deliver goods to those who cannot go out themselves for the things they need to survive.
“These three groups should be so proud. It is not simply a truck donation; this donation will provide food and goods to thousands of malnourished families,” said Robin Mahfood, President/ CEO of Food For The Poor. “I offer a million ‘thank you’s’ on behalf of all of the Haitians who will benefit from this generosity. We are truly grateful.”
The groups worked together to get the trucks for Haiti as quickly as possible, and delivery dates are scheduled for July and August.
“United Way for Southeastern Michigan, along with United Way Worldwide (UWW) and the United Auto Workers (UAW), is pleased to be donating four pick-up trucks built by two legendary Detroit companies (Ford and Chrysler) to Food For The Poor in support of Haitian relief and recovery efforts,” said Michael J. Brennan, President/CEO of United Way for Southeastern Michigan. “Millions of displaced people are working every day to rebuild their lives under extremely difficult circumstances. Brian Gallagher, President of UWW; Ron Gettelfinger, Outgoing President of the UAW; and I find this type of determination inspirational. We encourage other organizations to continue supporting efforts to rebuild Haiti—and we will continue to do our part.”
Food For The Poor, the largest international relief and development organization in the United States, does much more than feed millions of hungry poor in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America.
