UPDATE: Food For The Poor Provides Medicines, Treatment to Families in Haiti Cave

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (March 30, 2017) Haitian families discovered last week living in a cave for nearly six months are now receiving medical treatment as Food For The Poor continues to send regular deliveries of aid while working to build homes for all of them.

A doctor accompanied a response team from the charity and visited the cave in the mountains near Fonds Rouge Dahere on Monday to treat the adults and children in need.

After months of living in a damp, dark cave and being exposed to temperatures that swing from hot to cold, many are suffering from malnutrition, skin problems, respiratory infections and intestinal illnesses. In the silence of the cave, the coughs of small children struggling to breathe can be heard.

The charity is providing the families with medicines as well as a special feeding program to address malnutrition.

The humanitarian crisis emerged on March 22 when the charity’s agricultural director in Haiti discovered 240 people, including 84 women and 62 children, living in a cave while scouting for land to plant crops for families in the Grand’Anse region of Haiti.
