Archdiocese of Miami Partners with Food For The Poor
Coconut Creek, FL (September 18, 2008) – The Archdiocese of Miami and Food For The Poor have partnered in an effort to provide relief aid to Haiti, where four major storms have left the country in desperate need of assistance.
The Archdiocese of Miami, through Catholic Charities and four Haitian parishes, has been collecting food and clothing for the hurricane victims. Food For The Poor will be handling the shipping of these items, which will then be distributed in Haiti by Caritas.
Food For The Poor currently feeds millions of destitute children and their families in Haiti. Through its expansive networks of island-wide distribution hubs, Food For The Poor supports thousands of partners feeding the poorest of the poor. Food For The Poor will be donating a full container of rice to Archbishop Miot of Port-au-Prince, on behalf of Catholic Charities. Food For the Poor also maintains an extensive house building program, and will be providing assistance to Catholic Charities in the purchase and shipping of building materials. Since 1982, Food for The Poor has built and provided over 50,000 homes to families desperately in need of adequate shelter.
The Chief Executive Officer of Catholic Charities, Dr. Richard Turcotte, and the President of Food For The Poor, Robin Mahfood, met to formalize the arrangement which has been approved by Archbishop Favalora, as they all look forward to a jointly productive effort to assist the very poor of Haiti.
Food For The Poor, the second largest international relief and development organization in the nation and the #1 charity in Florida, does much more than simply feed the millions of hungry poor in 16 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. Since 1982, we have provided clean water, medicines, educational materials, homes, support for orphans and the aged, skills training and emergency relief, with more than 96% of all donations going directly to programs that help the poor.
