Panama Poverty Facts
- Poverty increased during the COVID-19 pandemic despite government efforts to mitigate its impact. In 2020, poverty increased to 14.1 percent compared to 12.1 percent in 2019, according to The World Bank.
- Poverty rates continue to be higher in indigenous territories than in the rest of the population, widening inequality.
- Panama has one of the highest income inequality rates in Latin America, according to the Inter-American Development Bank.
Help for Panama
In 2022, FFTP shipped 11 containers of goods to Panama that included food, household supplies and medical equipment. According to the Annual Report on Poverty and Extreme Poverty in Panama, issued by Panama Without Poverty Initiative and updated in November 2022, one in four Panamanians is poor. Today, the general poverty rate in Panama after Covid-19 is estimated at 25 percent.
