Food For The Poor 2021 Annual Report: Feeding, Empowering and Transforming Families
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (May 17, 2022) As Food For The Poor ended 2021 and began to plan for its 40th anniversary in February 2022, deadly disasters, a global pandemic, and other crises disrupted people’s lives in the Caribbean, Latin America and in the United States.
Through it all, thanks to the generous support of its donors, FFTP operated and supported programs that fed hundreds of thousands of people each day, as well as programs that offered a path out of poverty.
FFTP shipped 3,402 tractor-trailer loads of essential goods and provided more than 20 million lifesaving meals a month to malnourished children and families in 2021, according to the 2021 Annual Report.
Since its founding, FFTP has built 92,000 homes for the destitute and has provided $17.4 billion in aid. Last year, the charity constructed 3,510 housing units for families in need of safe shelter and implemented income-generating projects, transforming lives, and allowing families to break free from poverty.
FFTP responded quickly with aid to families who lost everything when a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the coast of Haiti on Aug. 14, 2021. By the end of 2021, FFTP had built 805 houses and delivered 1,329 tractor-trailer loads of food, health care, and educational supplies.
In response to the earthquake and the COVID-19 pandemic in Haiti, the charity:
- Assessed 22 housing projects and built two villages with 200 homes each.
- Built temporary shelters for approximately 1,222 students.
- Completed one new school and replaced or built 79 others.
- Facilitated the shipping of 11 ultra-low temperature freezers specially equipped to store COVID-19 vaccines.
- Shipped 171 tractor-trailer loads of medical supplies.
“Because of our donors’ support and our close relationship with in-country churches and partners, combined with FFTP’s longstanding distribution networks, we were able to respond with immediate and direct assistance,” FFTP President/CEO Ed Raine said.
FFTP is committed to providing life-changing, long-term livelihood solutions to families who have struggled to survive for generations. In 2021, several successful projects with training components were launched in collaboration with partners and experts, impacting entire communities in Haiti and Honduras, thanks to the loving compassion of FFTP’s donors.
In Haiti, 150 bee farmers were provided with equipment, materials and training to successfully maintain their own bee farming projects, allowing them to produce honey and generate an income to meet their family’s needs.
In Honduras, FFTP launched the coffee collection and processing center cooperative to increase the income of 150 coffee producers and to provide employment for 20 women who oversee the process for the manual selection of the coffee beans.
