Jay DiPietro to be Honored at Food For The Poor’s Building Hope Gala

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Aug. 30, 2013) – Food For The Poor’s 19th annual Building Hope Gala will honor Jay DiPietro, President/COO/General Manager of Boca West Country Club, as the 2014 Ambassador For The Poor. The gala will be Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 at The Polo Club of Boca Raton.
The first school Food For The Poor opened after Haiti’s 2010 earthquake was built with money raised by DiPietro and the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA). More than 100 students benefit yearly from the school in Petit Goave, Haiti, thanks to the generosity of CMAA members, and Palm Beach Country Club residents and staff.
“The children of Petit Goave had limited access to school even before the earthquake, but the situation afterward became even more critical. The children had no place to gather to learn,” said Robin Mahfood, President/CEO of Food For The Poor. “We are grateful to the Club Managers Association of America for what they have done for these children.”
DiPietro, CMAA Club Foundation Chairman and President, Boca West Country Club said, “The CMAA Club Foundation is honored to have the opportunity through the generosity of members and staff from over 40 private clubs who contributed to make this new school become a reality.”
For more than three decades, Food For The Poor and its donors have worked to bring relief to poor families, caring for their basic needs, and giving them a chance to live and work again.
“The diverse cultural background of South Florida leads me to believe that the majority, if not all South Floridians, have someone close to them who hails from a country being served by Food For The Poor,” said Carlos Bodden, a Building Hope Gala committee member and partner at Ellis, Ged & Bodden, P.A.
Building Hope Gala attendees will be invited to create a legacy by pledging to build critically needed houses in Ganthier, Haiti, during the charity’s live house rally. The evening also will feature an extensive silent auction, cocktail reception, gourmet dinner, and dancing. Bidding on silent auction prizes – such as electronics, jewelry, vacations, golf and dining packages – offer opportunities for guests to support the cause.
Plumed headdresses, palm trees, multi-colored lights, and vibrant sheer and satin drapes will infuse guests with the Island spirit at the Caribbean Carnival-themed gala. For a second year in a row, Jason Martinez, co-anchor for WPLG-TV ABC Local 10 Morning News and Local 10 News at Noon, will serve as the gala’s master of ceremonies.
“A unique aspect of being a resident of South Florida is enjoying the rich cultural diversity of our region,” said Dan Overbey, President/Managing Director of Atlantic Capital Advisors. “I joined Food For the Poor’s Building Hope Gala committee as a way to participate in a regional outreach program that cares for those affected by the lingering effects of the earthquake in Haiti. By doing so, it demonstrates our support to families in South Florida whose relatives were affected by this tragedy.”
With the help of its donors, Food For The Poor has built 4,162 two-room permanent homes in Haiti since the earthquake. While 1.3 million people were initially left homeless by the earthquake, an estimated 279,000 remain without proper shelter, according to published reports.
