FFTP Works With Partners to Respond to Earthquakes in Turkey and Syria
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Feb. 7, 2023) Food For The Poor (FFTP) is urgently responding with trusted partners to the devastation from a massive earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
- MAP International and Brother’s Brother Foundation are addressing health needs such as medicines and medical supplies.
- Feed My Starving Children will provide MannaPack rice meals to supply critically needed food and nutrition.
- Water Mission is assisting with safe water.
The death toll from Monday’s predawn 7.8-magnitude quake and series of strong aftershocks topped 7,000 and was still expected to rise.
The quakes caused widespread destruction stretching hundreds of miles across southeastern Turkey and neighboring Syria, toppling buildings, trapping people in the rubble and piling more misery in a region impacted by Syria’s long-standing civil war and refugee crisis.
The massive relief and rescue operation was compounded by frigid weather and the sheer scope of the destruction. More than 8,000 people have been pulled from the debris in Turkey alone, and some 380,000 have taken refuge in government shelters or hotels, Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay told the Associated Press.
“The images of the damage are shocking and the stories of survivors crying out for help are heartbreaking,” FFTP President/CEO Ed Raine said. “We know firsthand from responding to catastrophic disasters, such as the August 2021 earthquake in Haiti, that urgent help is needed and that the scale of the response needs to be enormous. We’re committed to working with our partners to help in a meaningful way.”
While FFTP’s mission primarily is to serve internationally in the Caribbean and Latin America, the charity has responded in the past to catastrophic disasters elsewhere in the world. Last year, FFTP worked with longtime partner Feed My Staving Children to respond to the war in Ukraine, providing support for food aid consisting of MannaPack rice meals.
FFTP is launching a campaign with radio partners to raise funds to provide assistance. They include hosts Mike Gallagher, Hugh Hewitt, Dr. Sebastian Gorka and Brandon Tatum, as well as news services SRN News and TOWNHALL News.
Listeners and donors have two options on how to provide a gift to FFTP to help the people of Turkey and Syria:
