Help Haiti Event: South Florida Unites With Food For The Poor

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Sept. 7, 2021) South Florida pro sports teams, businesses, churches, schools and community groups are coming together with Food For The Poor to help families in Haiti with critically needed food and other disaster relief items.

The charity is hosting a Help Haiti Community Collection Event from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday at its Coconut Creek warehouse, 6401 Lyons Road.

Relief items, whether from individuals or gathered by groups during their own collection drives, can be dropped off at the charity’s warehouse during those hours.

Miami Dolphins alum Nat Moore, the team’s Senior Vice President of Special Projects and Alumni Relations, and Jason Jenkins, Senior Vice President of Communications and Community Affairs, will visit the charity to pack cleaning kits and baby kits for families in great need.

Representatives from the Miami Marlins will deliver about 250 disaster bags that will be packed at a Marlins staff event on Thursday.

And the Florida Panthers will have about 10 staff members volunteering to sort goods.

“We’re heartened that so many in South Florida have recognized that Haiti needs our help and continue to provide desperately needed food and other supplies to help families recover from two disasters on top of one another, first the earthquake and then a tropical storm,” FFTP President/CEO Ed Raine said.

“Many have been doing collection drives on their own. We’re so grateful for their generosity and that we can be of service to ensure those items get to the families who need them most,” Raine added. “While we look at Haiti’s long-term needs such as providing homes to those who have been displaced, we know there continues to be dire need for the most basic items.”

The August 14 quake resulted in more than 2,200 deaths, injured more than 12,000 people and destroyed as many as 53,000 homes. Another 77,000 homes were damaged. Tropical Storm Grace followed a few days later, unleashing even more misery.

Locally, residents in South Florida are doing their part to help their destitute brothers and sisters in Haiti.

Boca Helping Hands will deliver four to five pallets of relief items collected for Haiti at Friday’s event.

Students from Florida International University will drop off donated goods they collected for Haiti in addition to volunteering with the sorting of items.

For the past two weeks, Bravo Supermarkets – whose owners, Juan and Eliza Diaz, are longtime supporters of FFTP – have hosted a collection drive with FFTP-branded boxes at 14 Bravo, Key Foods and La Ideal supermarkets in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties to help poverty-stricken families in Haiti.

Others holding collection drives on behalf of the charity include Habitat for Humanity of Broward, GED Lawyers of Boca Raton, Sunset Presbyterian Church of Fort Lauderdale, King Suzuki of Deerfield Beach, and Coconut Creek Subaru.

The West Pines United FC held a fundraiser to help earthquake victims in Haiti as well as collected multiple boxes of relief items.
