Support Our Poverty and Hunger Relief Efforts

At Food For The Poor, feeding the hungry is at the heart of our mission. We prioritize the preservation of human dignity and compassionate care for those in need. Our approach to poverty is rooted in sustainable, community-driven solutions that empower long-term change. From 2019 to 2023, we provided 943 million meals and delivered $3.2 billion in aid to communities across Latin America and the Caribbean. Our growing network of donors and volunteers shares our belief that poverty is not inevitable—it is solvable. Join us in the fight: spread the word, shop from our Humanitarian Gift Catalog, or become a donor today.

Together We Can Fight Child Malnutrition

Haiti is facing a deepening food crisis as violence, political unrest, and economic instability drive prices beyond the reach of many families. The impact on children is especially severe, with rates of acute malnutrition rising sharply. UNICEF estimates that 2.85 million children—one quarter of the nation’s child population—are food insecure, and more than a million of them face critical levels of need.

In response, Food For The Poor’s Rise & Shine campaign, part of the SHINE (Strengthening Hope through Inclusive Nutrition and Education) program, is providing daily breakfast to 10,000 children in 29 schools across northern Haiti. For many students, the simple yet nourishing peanut butter and cassava bread sandwich is their only dependable meal of the day. This cost-effective breakfast not only addresses hunger but also improves concentration, supports school attendance, and gives children the energy they need to learn, grow, and build toward a brighter future.

Importantly, both the cassava bread and the peanut butter are sourced from Haitian farmers, creating reliable markets for 600 small farms in the North. By relying on local production rather than imported food, the program strengthens rural livelihoods while ensuring resilience and sustainability in the face of national instability.

From Haitian Farms to Classrooms

Supporting 600 Haitians

Farmers

A vital part of Rise & Shine is that it strengthens communities by supporting 600 small farmers across six northern Haitian communities. Instead of relying on imported food, the program sources cassava bread and peanut butter locally, creating steady markets for farmers while providing nutritious meals for children.

The peanut butter and cassavas are also locally produced, providing Haitian farmers with training, fair contracts, and stable prices that help them sustain their families and invest in their futures. In a country where food insecurity affects nearly three million children, this locally grounded approach builds resilience. It empowers farmers, keeps resources circulating within communities, and delivers nutritious meals to children who might otherwise go hungry. By feeding students through Haitian-grown food, donors are not only combating malnutrition but also fueling a sustainable cycle of hope and opportunity.

FFTP Magazines: SUMMER edition available for download

This issue focuses on the growing crises of hunger and poverty, and how Food For The Poor and partners are responding with hope. We feature the story of Semana Santa (Holy Week)—a cherished tradition now embraced as a season of service, with communities distributing meals, collecting donations, and engaging youth in acts of kindness.

We also share the inspiring journey of Santiago, a young boy in El Salvador with a rare genetic disorder. With no local treatment available, his family found hope through the support of FUSAL, Duke University Hospital, and our generous donors—leading to life-saving care and a new path forward.
