Many of the children in Angels of Hope come to the program from families that have been trapped in poverty for generations. For three vulnerable children—David, Astre, and Madelyn—poverty once seemed like an inescapable reality. However, after joining the Angels of Hope program, their life prospects completely turned around. Achieving such remarkable results takes years of nurturing and dedication, made possible by a network of deeply invested donors who aren't afraid to step up to save a life, and make a lasting impact on our future.
Without intervention, children born into poverty continue the cycle into adulthood and each new generation inherits the disadvantages of the previous one. Short-term aid helps with immediate needs, but tackling intergenerational poverty leads to sustainable, long-term change. It allows individuals to rise out of poverty permanently, rather than relying on temporary relief.
Poverty not only impacts individuals but also limits the economic potential of entire communities and countries. Breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty creates more educated, skilled, and productive members of society, leading to increased economic growth and social stability. Stories like those of David, Astre, and Madelyn challenge the belief that poverty is inevitable, which often serves as an excuse for inaction. With a gift of just $1 a day, you can ensure that a child receives nutritious meals, clean water, clothing, and a safe environment where they can flourish. Through our Angels of Hope program, you also provide access to education, emotional and psychological support, while empowering them with independence and lifelong skills.
In El Salvador, David pushes the boundaries as a chef for NutriFood, a local food preparation company, where he supervises the general kitchen area.
His ability to experiment and reimagine recipes has propelled his career as a chef while honoring his cultural heritage in every meal he creates. He often blends traditional Mexican flavors with creative techniques to craft unique dishes.
Growing up in Food For The Poor's Angel Of Hope program gave David the opportunities and support to turn his passion into a thriving, successful career.
He credits the program with his achievements. 'I think if I hadn’t been in a home, I wouldn’t be a cook.'
You can change a child’s future and allow them the opportunity to discover their talents, follow their dreams, and achieve a fulfilling, successful, and productive life.
From an early age, Gerson, now 25, understood that education could be his way out of poverty. But in reality, that hope felt distant. With his mother gone for days at a time trying to earn a living, Gerson was often left completely on his own. Like many children across Latin America, he endured long stretches without supervision, skipped meals because there was no food, and felt invisible as he struggled to get through each day.
Even though he often felt unseen, he held onto one thing: the belief that he wasn’t forgotten.
His life changed when he entered an Angels of Hope–supported home — a place where he finally had safety, stability, regular meals, and the chance to attend school. There, Gerson didn’t just find shelter; he found the opportunity to build a future he had once only imagined.
Today, he is an Agricultural Engineer, working to strengthen and modernize farming practices so families and communities can become more resilient and self-sufficient.
The Angels of Hope children learn practical skills that strengthen their confidence and independence. Participating in the daily chores of the children's home gives them a sense of pride and teaches them the importance of working together.

The children also help care for the gardens and tend crops-planting, watering, and eventually harvesting what they've grown. In addition, they participate in daily tasks such as unloading food supplies from trucks, cooking, and cleaning.
JOIN THE PROGRAMAstre's future is as bright as the vibrant colors in her paintings. At 28, she's a successful artist, wife, and mother, honing the craft she fell in love with as a child.
Her life began, she says, when she arrived at a Food For The Poor supported home through the Angels Of Hope program in Honduras. It was there she discovered her love of drawing and painting.
Astre will never forget the love and support she received growing up. Thanks to the Angels Of Hope program, she transformed a challenging experience into a life filled with hope and promise.
Astre's artistic talent was nurtured from an early age. At 12, she won an Angels of Hope art contest and its $500 prize, which helped her pursue her dream of studying at Bellas Artes in Tegucigalpa. "It wasn't easy for the home to send me," she recalled, "but after I won the contest, they were excited and did everything they could to make it possible."
