100 Homes for the Poor: Food For The Poor Donors Break #GivingTuesday Record
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Nov. 29, 2017) One hundred homes will be built for poor families in Jamaica, Honduras and Nicaragua, thanks to the generous support of Food For The Poor donors on #GivingTuesday.
“Our hearts are filled with deep gratitude because we know that a home is the first step in breaking the cycle for poverty for those we serve throughout the Caribbean and Latin America,” said Food For The Poor Executive Director Angel Aloma. “To be able to provide a family who has spent years – or in some cases decades – living in inhumane conditions with a safe and sturdy place to live is a beautiful gift.”
For the sixth consecutive year, Food For The Poor participated in #GivingTuesday, which is recognized on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. The day has been set aside to inspire people to collaborate in ways to improve their local communities and to give back in meaningful ways.
Food For The Poor started the day of giving with Aloma live on the national show “Seize the Day” on Sirius Radio hosted by Gus Lloyd. The #GivingTuesday campaign goal was 24 homes in 24 hours, with a dollar-for-dollar match up to $100,000. But the charity’s fundraising goal more than quadrupled to 100 homes, breaking its #GivingTuesday donation record.
The 100 homes will help to transform the lives of children such as Eva, who lives with her mom in a tiny shack in Nicaragua that’s on the verge of collapsing. Here is Eva’s story www.foodforthepoor.org/givinghomes.
“It is heartwarming to see the generosity of so many come together on one day,” Aloma said. “Is there anything we cannot do, when that spirit is a priority? We are hopeful the #GivingTuesday initiative will become a long-lasting tradition for us in our mission to serve the poor.”
Food For The Poor, one of the largest international relief and development organizations in the nation, does much more than feed millions of the hungry poor primarily in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. This interdenominational Christian ministry provides emergency relief assistance, clean water, medicines, educational materials, homes, support for orphans and the aged, skills training and micro-enterprise development assistance. Over the last 10 years, fundraising and other administrative costs averaged less than 5 percent of our expenses; more than 95 percent of all donations went directly to programs that help the poor.
