The New Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Miami, Philip T.Y. Wang, visited the Food For The Poor offices in Coconut Creek, Fla., and met with President and CEO, Robin Mahfood today. Taiwan has donated more than 2,200 tons of rice in its most recent donation to the international development and relief organization for its food assistance programs in Haiti. This latest shipment of rice is expected to reach the Caribbean nation in July. | |

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (May 3, 2013) – As Food For The Poor greets Philip T.Y. Wang, the new Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Miami, more than 2,200 tons of rice will soon be heading to Haiti from Taiwan.
Shipped by sea from the ports of Taipei to the Caribbean nation, the rice was donated to Food For The Poor for its food assistance programs, and is expected to arrive in Port-au-Prince by the end of July.
“Once again, we are so very thankful for this beautiful blessing on behalf of the poor that we serve,” said Robin Mahfood, President/CEO of Food For The Poor, who welcomed Director General Wang to the Food For The Poor headquarters today. “Taiwan has been a generous provider of this life-saving food source for hundreds of thousands people in Haiti, especially during last year’s storm season, when Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs donated 110 containers of rice. With this year’s storm season right around the corner, we are gratified knowing this latest shipment of rice will soon be in place.”
Director General Wang, who replaces Ray Mou as Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Miami, is no stranger to South Florida. He served as the Director of the Administrative Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office for nearly four years, more than a decade ago, and says he is looking forward to future initiatives with Food For The Poor.
“This is my second time being posted here, and I have high respect for what you are doing. My government, my people and your organization share a common goal, and this is very important,” said Wang. “I really admire your devotion for helping needy people to be self-sufficient. I am here with you.”
In addition to working with Food For The Poor on emergency relief projects, TECO and other Taiwan partners have assisted with in-country production of food through agriculture, farm-raised fish and livestock breeding – self-sustaining initiatives that teach people how to earn a living.
The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Miami is one of the 12 offices under the Washington D.C.-based Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office. The Miami office was established in 1991.
Food For The Poor, named by The Chronicle of Philanthropy as the largest international relief and development organization in the nation, does much more than feed millions of the hungry poor in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America.
