FFTP and Republic of China (Taiwan) Sign Agreement to Bring Much-Needed Rice to Vulnerable Families in Guatemala
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Jan. 22, 2026) – Food For The Poor (FFTP) and the Republic of China (Taiwan) are further expanding their collaboration to fight hunger in Guatemala by doubling the amount of rice shipments to feed vulnerable families.
On Tuesday, FFTP and the Republic of China (Taiwan) announced an agreement to ship 1,980 metric tons of lifesaving rice to hungry families during a ceremony in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
The donation, equivalent to 110 tractor-trailer loads or shipping containers, will be delivered monthly beginning in February and continuing through November, providing lifesaving rice for more than half a million people.
The agreement was announced during a ceremony led by Vivia Chang, Taiwan’s Ambassador to Guatemala, and attended by officials from FFTP and its partners, Cáritas Arquidiocesana and the Order of Malta. Distribution of the rice will be managed by Cáritas Arquidiocesana and The Order of Malta through their feeding and nutrition programs.
FFTP’s partnership with the Taiwanese government and the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) dates back to 2007. This is the third year FFTP has received rice donations for Guatemala from Taiwan.
“We have built a strong and lasting partnership with the government of Taiwan and the TawanICDF over the last two decades,” said Mark Khouri, FFTP Executive Vice President of Key Relationships & Stewardship. “Their decision to double the amount of rice for Guatemala is a powerful testament to our shared commitment to alleviate hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean. Together, with our partners, we will make a tremendous impact on the lives of thousands of people.”
“I wish to begin by expressing my most sincere appreciation for the admirable work carried out by Food For The Poor, Cáritas Arquidiocesana, and the Order of Malta. Their ongoing efforts and invaluable humanitarian contributions have been, and will continue to be, essential in improving the quality of life of the most vulnerable communities,” Ambassador Chang said. “With this purpose in mind, we join this noble cause through the donation of 1,980 tons of rice, intended to make a tangible contribution to the food security of families in vulnerable situations and to reaffirm our commitment to strong and lasting cooperation.”
A second ceremony will take place next month in Haiti, where the Republic of China (Taiwan) has agreed to ship 8,208 metric tons of rice to vulnerable families in need. That donation, equivalent to 456 tractor-trailer loads or shipping containers, will be delivered monthly, starting in February and continuing through December, providing lifesaving rice for more than 2 million people.
