Fifteen Families in Haiti to Get Homes, Thanks to Gettysburg Man
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Nov. 30, 2016) More than 100 people attended the first Homes For Haiti Dinner, presented by Food For The Poor in Gettysburg, Pa., on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016, making the dream of a safe and secure home a reality for 15 families in Gressier, Haiti.
Gettysburg resident Frank Bender, a longtime supporter of the international relief and development organization, was inspired to do more after traveling to Haiti with the charity last December. On that trip, he witnessed firsthand the dire need and the blessings made possible by charitable donations.
“The poverty and living conditions of so many Haitians are terrible, but their spirit and friendliness are wonderful,” said Bender. “I initiated a Champions Page on Food for the Poor’s web site and invited friends to contribute. Although I raised some money, I knew in order to reach my goal as fast as possible, I needed to do more. So I contacted the incredible staff at Food for the Poor and we began planning for the dinner.”
The inaugural dinner provided guests with a flare of the Caribbean with its colorful décor and the festive sounds of steel pan music by the Steel Fusion Band. But the seriousness of the evening was not lost. Bender shared his experiences in Haiti with a video presentation and Food For The Poor Executive Director Angel Aloma spoke passionately about the work of the organization before thanking Bender and his supporters for their loving generosity.
“We want to thank everyone in Gettysburg who made Homes For Haiti a successful event. It’s heart-warming and humbling when we meet people who care to make a difference in the lives of the suffering,” said Aloma. “This event will allow Food For The Poor to take families out of communities where conditions are inhumane and provide them with a home and self-sustaining opportunities to care for their families. It’s a priceless gift to give someone.”
Proceeds from the Homes For Haiti event will be used to support Food For The Poor’s housing program in Gressier, Haiti, for Alpha Village residents. The funds will provide sturdy, concrete homes with water and sanitation components, along with solar-powered light kits. It’s not too late to support this home building project.
