Food For The Poor Thanks Office Depot Foundation
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (July 28, 2016) Thanks to the generosity of the Office Depot Foundation, the international relief and development organization Food For The Poor will be able to provide 6,000 sackpacks for the children in its Angels Of Hope program in 10 countries.
The colorful sackpacks are filled with essential school supplies and important tools children need to succeed in school – and in life – at the beginning of the new school year.
“This beautiful donation will allow children to enter the school year with supplies that have the potential to change their lives,” Angel Aloma, Executive Director of Food For The Poor, said Thursday at the sackpack distribution event in Fort Lauderdale.
“When they get something like this, it’s not just that they have the supplies to go back to school. It’s that for the first time in their lives they feel mainstream. They feel like normal kids. They feel remembered. They feel blessed. They feel fortunate. Through this gift, these children will be offered the chance at dignity, success and hope for the future,” Aloma said.
Through the Angels Of Hope program, caring donors to Food For The Poor have sponsored approximately 5,200 children in 154 orphanages throughout the Caribbean and Latin America, where the children receive food, clothing, shelter, education and lots of love. These homes are dedicated to serving orphaned or abandoned, abused, and malnourished children in the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, and Trinidad.
This is the fifth year that Food For The Poor has received sackpacks from the Office Depot Foundation. More than 20,000 sackpacks have been donated.
The National Backpack Program is in its 16th year and has made a difference to more than 4 million children.
“The sackpacks and school supplies we donate help to level the playing field and give these wonderful children a reason to stand just a little bit taller,” said Office Depot Foundation President Mary Wong.
“We believe that every child should have the opportunity to go to school with dignity and hope. We are proud to make a difference in this community again this year,” Wong said.
Food For The Poor, one of the largest international relief and development organizations in the nation, does much more than feed millions of the hungry poor primarily in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. This interdenominational Christian ministry provides emergency relief assistance, clean water, medicines, educational materials, homes, support for orphans and the aged, skills training and micro-enterprise development assistance, with more than 95 percent of all donations going directly to programs that help the poor.
