Republic of China (Taiwan), Food For The Poor Sign Agreement for Rice Donation to Haiti
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (April 5, 2018) In Haiti, rice is life. Soon, lifesaving shipments of rice will be on their way to feed Haiti’s hungry poor, thanks to the kindness of the Republic of China’s (Taiwan) Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) represented by Cheng-Hao Hu, the ambassador to Haiti from the Republic of China (Taiwan), and Bishop Ogé Beauvoir, Executive Director of Food For The Poor-Haiti, signed a memorandum of understanding today at the charity’s office in Port-au-Prince. The agreement spells out the details of the partnership to deliver the rice.
Also on hand for the signing was Stephanie Auguste, Haiti’s Minister of Social Affairs.
The Republic of China (Taiwan) is sending 6,100 metric tons of rice in seven shipments in May, June, July, August, September, October and November.
The latest donation of rice will provide 53 million meals for the hungry poor.
“I am pleased that the Minister of Social Affairs and Labor has witnessed the signature of this agreement this year, it brings something more to this relationship,” Beauvoir said. “This partnership with the Taiwanese Government provides Food For The Poor with the opportunity to feed the children, the elderly and the sick. This rice donation is helping Food For The Poor to meet its mission to help the poorest of the poor.”
Ambassador Hu thanked Food For The Poor for its role in the partnership.
“Food For The Poor is an international organization of great renown, dynamic and visible in Haiti since 1986 in many projects and I am convinced that this rice will be well-distributed to the people in need, as always,” Ambassador Hu said.
Food For The Poor will distribute the donated rice to sponsored programs, one of which is the charity’s feeding center in Port-au-Prince. Approximately 15,000 hot meals are cooked and distributed from this location six days a week.
“For more than a decade, Taiwan has been a wonderful supporter of this organization, providing lifesaving food for hundreds of thousands people in Haiti and many other countries,” said Food For The Poor President/CEO Robin Mahfood. “On behalf of all those we serve, we are grateful for this generosity.”
Food For The Poor, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Taiwan) and the Ministry of Agriculture (Taiwan) have partnered on multiple projects since 2005 in Central America and in the Caribbean.
Since 2007 alone, Food For The Poor has received more than 72 million pounds of rice for Haiti through Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Food For The Poor, one of the largest international relief and development organizations in the nation, does much more than feed millions of the hungry poor primarily in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America.
