Taiwan Officials Visit Food For The Poor
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (May 22, 2018) Today, the new Director General of the Taipei Economic Cultural Office in Miami visited Food For The Poor’s headquarters to offer support of the work that the organization is doing for the poor, especially in Haiti.
Director General David K.C. Chien and Food For The Poor President/CEO Robin Mahfood met to talk about the charity’s work, and how they can continue to work together to find better solutions for those who live in poverty. The two leaders followed the tradition of exchanging symbolic gifts between the organizations.
Chien was joined by Vice Consul Adolfo Sun.
“We are very thankful for Director General Chien’s friendship and his support of Food For The Poor,” Mahfood said. “For more than a decade, Taiwan has been a wonderful supporter of this organization, providing lifesaving food for hundreds of thousands people in Haiti and many other countries.”
Chien said Taiwan once was the recipient of international aid that helped rebuild its economy.
“We want to show our compassion to our international allies and those countries in need of Taiwan’s expertise,” he said.
Forty tractor-trailer loads of rice soon will be on the way to Haiti and should arrive in mid-July, thanks to the kindness of Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Republic of China (Taiwan) is sending 6,100 metric tons of rice to Haiti in seven shipments in May, June, July, August, September, October and November. The latest gift of rice will provide 53 million meals for the hungry poor.
Food For The Poor will distribute the donated rice to sponsored programs, one of which is the charity’s feeding center in Port-au-Prince. Approximately 15,000 hot meals are cooked and distributed from this location six days a week.
Food For The Poor, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Taiwan) and the Ministry of Agriculture (Taiwan) have partnered on multiple projects since 2005 in Central America and in the Caribbean. Since 2007 alone, Food For The Poor has received more than 72 million pounds of rice for Haiti through Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In addition, the Republic of China (Taiwan) has donated 10,000 fruit trees and computers through the charity to schools in St. Lucia.
Food For The Poor, one of the largest international relief and development organizations in the nation, does much more than feed millions of the hungry poor primarily in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. This interdenominational Christian ministry provides emergency relief assistance, clean water, medicines, educational materials, homes, support for orphans and the aged, skills training and micro-enterprise development assistance.
