Taiwan Reaches Out to Haiti Through Food For The Poor

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Feb. 2, 2010) – Taiwan and Food For The Poor are leveraging their strong partnership to provide food for the earthquake-stricken people of Haiti. Two hundred tons of rice will arrive on Friday, and another shipment of 200 tons is scheduled to be delivered in April.

In addition, Taiwan’s President Ma traveled to the Dominican Republic last week to personally oversee the handing over of 10 tons of relief supplies. Taiwan is offering food aid to meet emergency needs, working through Food For The Poor and other agencies to see that it gets into the hands of the hungry.

“When times have been tough for Haiti in the past, the Taiwanese have helped us feed Haiti, and they are doing so again in response to the earthquake,” said Robin Mahfood, President/CEO of Food For The Poor. “We are grateful for their continued partnership with us — not only to meet the immediate food needs, but in helping us come up with solutions for long-term hunger problems.”

The Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (Taiwan ICDF) has extensive experience in the development of fish farms, especially in growing tilapia, and has partnered with Food For The Poor to establish basa farms in the poverty-stricken, food-deficient countries served by the nonprofit.

Meeting more immediate needs, Taiwan also has sent medical teams to Haiti to help the recovery efforts.
