THX Supports Food For The Poor’s Cancer Screening Project
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (March 14, 2016) The South Florida-based THX Company is helping Food For The Poor provide medical care for the early detection and treatment of women with cervical cancer in Mixco, Guatemala. The women living in this community are dying at an alarming rate simply because they cannot afford to pay for basic gynecological examinations.
According to the World Health Organization, cervical cancer is the leading cause of death with women in this Central American country. In the majority of these cases, 80 percent of these women have never received a medical checkup for early diagnosis.
“This troubling reality has prompted Food For The Poor, in conjunction with the Guatemalan Association of the Sovereign Order of Malta, to create the Cervical Cancer Screening Project,” said Angel Aloma, Executive Director of Food For The Poor. “Thanks to the loving support of Food For The Poor donors, these women now have access to life saving screenings, which are saving lives.”
Support from donors such as THX is helping organizations like Food For The Poor fund ongoing programs like the Cervical Cancer Screening Project, by donating proceeds from sales, and encouraging customers who buy their products to make a donation.
“THX is not a company using ‘giving’ as a marketing tool to increase sales. On the contrary, it is a genuine giving mechanism connecting conscious consumers to causes they care about, simply through the daily essential products they love to use every day,” said Ricardo Jose Bueso, THX Co-founder and Executive Director. “Thanks is one of the most translated phrases in the world. It expresses gratitude, shows appreciation and brings people together. Now, we’re translating it to the language of social good.”
Ricardo Jose Bueso, 24, and his brother Ricardo Juan Bueso, 29, THX’s Co-founder and Managing Director, launched their company in the creative Wynwood neighborhood of Miami in 2014. About a year ago, the brothers relocated their corporate offices to Hollywood, Fla., where their key products are fragrances for women and men, and coffee that’s farmed in the rich volcanic soil by farmers in Guatemala.
“Working with local organizations has been fundamental at THX since day one. We first learned about Food For The Poor through our local church. Food For The Poor has a record for effective and comprehensive care for communities throughout Latin America,” said Ricardo Jose. “It’s always a humbling experience to know you’re connected to any kind of positive social impact. The fact that it’s for Guatemalan mothers in need adds even more significance for us. Not only is our family originally from there, but we also work there to support local communities.”
Mixco is a combined urban and rural area west of Guatemala City that’s separated by canyons and is only accessible by bridges. Food For The Poor’s Cervical Cancer Screening Project will provide educational information about cervical cancer, as well as gynecological exams of more than 3,000 women in Mixco and its surrounding municipalities. These tests will be sent to a pathologist for analysis, and those requiring it will receive hospitalization, surgery and treatment according to their diagnoses.
“It’s amazing that a local company has been created by two brothers in their 20s with a business model that’s focused on giving back to help the less fortunate,” said Aloma. “It’s especially heart-felt because they have not forgotten their family’s roots, and are truly making a difference in the lives of families in Guatemala.”
