The Most Rev. Burchell A. McPherson, D.D
DIRECTOR & FINANCE COMMITTEE MEMBER
The Most Rev. Burchell A. McPherson, D.D. of Jamaica, has been a member of the Food For The Poor (FFTP) Board of Directors for more than 25 years and serves on the board’s Finance Committee.
Among his many accomplishments with FFTP, Bishop Burchell, as he is affectionately known, was instrumental in tripling the annual distribution of food and medical supplies, housing solutions, and self-help projects for the Diocese and the ecumenical community of western Jamaica.
Ordained to the priesthood in June 1991, Bishop Burchell was immediately posted to St. Pius X where he served for 25 years, both as Lay Administrator and priest. In addition to being pastor, he was given the additional charge of the faith community at St. Peter Claver Church on Waltham Park where he served for six years. In 2007, he was named Pastor of the Parish of Sts. Peter and Paul and St. Martin dePorres Church in Gordon Town.
Bishop Burchell was installed as the 3rd Bishop of Montego Bay on June 8, 2013, and has since then become the Patron of the Good Shepherd Foundation – the social outreach arm of the Diocese.
In 2020, during the Covid 19 pandemic, Bishop Burchell single-handedly solicited major funding from benefactors and donors to feed 300 poor and homeless people in Montego Bay and neighboring inner-city communities three times a week. This act of charity continues to this present time. He also was instrumental in starting Monsignor Gladstone Wilson College For Boys in Montego Bay.
Bishop Burchell retired in 2023 and now holds the title of Bishop Emeritus, Roman Catholic Diocese of Montego Bay, Jamaica.
