Food For The Poor Rushes Aid to Help Hurricane Florence Victims
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Sept. 17, 2018) Longtime partners Food For The Poor and Matthew 25: Ministries are teaming up to rush disaster relief supplies to help people in the hardest hit areas recover from Hurricane Florence.
Food For The Poor has received three tractor-trailer loads of goods from Matthew 25: Ministries for the relief effort. Items include water, hygiene items, cleaning supplies, paper towels and toilet paper.
The goods will be distributed by Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Raleigh, N.C., which serves the eastern half of North Carolina.
“Food For The Poor is one of Matthew 25: Ministries’ oldest and most trusted partners,” said Matthew 25: Ministries’ CEO Tim Mettey. “We are looking forward to working with them to help those here in the United States, who have been devastated by this disaster.”
Daniel Altenau, Director of Communications and Disaster Services for Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Raleigh, said a disaster can be one of the most traumatic things a family can experience.
“We are working with local partner agencies to address the immediate needs of families across central and eastern North Carolina,” Altenau said.
“We are grateful to Food For The Poor for their support of our recovery efforts,” he said. “We know that no one can recover from a disaster this big alone, and no single agency can meet all the needs of survivors. But, as a community, we can care for our neighbors in need.”
While Food For The Poor’s mission primarily is to serve internationally, the charity has responded in the past to catastrophic disasters in the United States. Last year, Food For The Poor and Matthew 25: Ministries teamed up to help residents in Texas impacted by Hurricane Harvey.
“We are all neighbors, regardless of our locations, especially in this time of need,” said Food For The Poor President/CEO Robin Mahfood. “We want to be there for our brothers and sisters who are hardest hit by Hurricane Florence.”
Matthew 25: Ministries is an international humanitarian aid and disaster relief organization headquartered in Cincinnati. It responds to disaster situations that are so catastrophic or comprehensive in nature that coping with the aftermath is beyond the capabilities of the community or surrounding areas.
Matthew 25: Ministries provides critical necessities in disaster areas including tarps, blankets, nonperishable food, water, personal care products, baby supplies, medical supplies and cleaning products to support relief and recovery efforts.
Hurricane Florence made landfall early Friday near Wrightsville Beach, N.C., as a Category 1 storm packing winds of 90 mph. The storm lingered in the Carolinas over the weekend, producing devastating amounts of rain.
Food For The Poor, one of the largest international relief and development organizations in the nation, does much more than feed millions of the hungry poor primarily in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. This interdenominational Christian ministry provides emergency relief assistance, clean water, medicines, educational materials, homes, support for orphans and the aged, skills training and micro-enterprise development assistance.
