Staff of Bankers Healthcare Group Collects Backpacks for Haiti
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Aug. 3, 2015) – “Let’s make a difference in the lives of the children in Haiti!” That quickly became the mantra for the staff at Bankers Healthcare Group, a provider of financing solutions for healthcare professionals located in Davie, Fla., after the brother of the company’s co-founder lost his battle with cancer.
In February, BHG relocated and donated its office furniture to Food For The Poor. The donation went to schools and orphanages supported by the charity in Haiti and Jamaica. Peter ‘Tato’ Estrada, excited about BHG’s furniture donation, spearheaded a backpack donation to help children in need. Sadly, Estrada was diagnosed with cancer in March and died in April.
“It was Peter’s wish to come up with a fundraiser at BHG for the children in the orphanages of Haiti. Once Peter lost his battle with cancer, we had to fulfill his dream of completing this fundraiser,” said Sofia Castro, Estrada’s sister. “It is an awesome feeling to know that we have the ability to provide these children with such needed tools to attend school, which is a normal everyday occurrence in the U.S.”
Castro asked BHG’s staff members in Florida and New York to donate toward the cause. Staff in both offices used their own resources and purchased 145 new backpacks and school supplies. Wearing PMA T-shirts, which stands for ‘positive mental attitude,’ last week a small assembly line of employees at the BHG offices in Davie, stuffed the new backpacks with pencils, composition books, crayons and other school supplies.
Once again, the company reached out to Food For The Poor. The charity decided the backpacks donated in Estrada’s memory will go to three orphanages in Haiti, where children are receiving loving care in its Angels Of Hope child sponsoring program.
“The loss of a loved one is never easy. What Sofia Castro and the staff at Bankers Healthcare Group did in her brother’s honor is really remarkable,” said Angel Aloma, Executive Director of Food For The Poor. “There are more than 4,500 children in Food For The Poor’s Angels Of Hope program in 139 orphanages throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. On behalf of the children who will be receiving these backpacks for the start of new school year, we say thank you for your generosity.”
BHG would like to make the backpack donation an annual event, but is currently seeking donations for an additional 200 backpacks for the children in communities near the Angels Of Hope orphanages. BHG wants to hand over these additional backpacks to Food For The Poor on Aug. 17. Please click www.foodforthepoor.org/estrada to make a donation toward the additional backpacks and to supply lunch for one year for these students. The first day of class is Sept. 1 in Haiti.
