Food For The Poor Donors Exceed #GivingTuesday Goal: Hundreds of Homes Will Be Built for Families in Dire Need

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Dec. 3, 2020) Hundreds of homes will be built in the countries where Food For The Poor serves, thanks to donors who generously supported the charity’s #GivingTuesday housing match campaign. The goal had been 100 homes.

“This year’s #GivingTuesday campaign is very special for Food For The Poor, as we continue to help so many who are enduring the pandemic and one crisis after another,” said Angel Aloma, Food For The Poor EVP & Chief Marketing Officer. “Thanks to our donors’ gifts and a housing match, 223 homes will be built to help families living in poverty. We are grateful for this opportunity to be a blessing for more than 200 families.”

For nine years, Food For The Poor has been part of the global movement #GivingTuesday, celebrated on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

The success of this year’s #GivingTuesday means Food For The Poor will be able to provide new homes to more of the families whose homes were destroyed by the back-to-back hurricanes in Central America. On Nov. 3, Category 4 Hurricane Eta left a deadly path of destruction in Nicaragua, Guatemala and in Honduras. Two weeks later, Hurricane Iota, another catastrophic Category 4 hurricane, took the same path.

For families like Maria and her eight children in Santa Cruz de Yojoa, Honduras, who have been living in poverty for many years, these storms made a dire situation worse. But thanks to caring Food For The Poor donors, families like Maria and her children will have a secure place they can truly call home. Since inception, the charity has built more than 87,000 homes that have helped to transform the lives of families throughout the Caribbean and Latin America.
