Food For The Poor, Matthew 25: Ministries Team Up to Help Hurricane Harvey Victims in Texas
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Aug. 29, 2017) Longtime partners Food For The Poor and Matthew 25: Ministries are teaming up to provide disaster relief to people suffering from Hurricane Harvey in Texas.
Five containers of relief goods are being shipped to Texas. Those critical items include two truckloads of apple, orange and tomato juice, two truckloads of water, personal hygiene products and cleaning supplies, and one truckload of bread. Additional shipments are planned.
While Food For The Poor’s mission primarily is to serve internationally, the charity has responded in the past to catastrophic disasters in the United States. Last year, Food For The Poor and Matthew 25: Ministries teamed up to help residents in southern Louisiana impacted by record flooding.
Matthew 25: Ministries is an international humanitarian aid and disaster relief organization headquartered in Cincinnati. It responds to disaster situations that are so catastrophic or comprehensive in nature that coping with the aftermath is beyond the capabilities of the community or surrounding areas.
Matthew 25: Ministries provides critical necessities in disaster areas including tarps, blankets, nonperishable food, water, personal care products, baby supplies, medical supplies and cleaning products to support relief and recovery efforts.
“Working with Matthew 25: Ministries to respond to Hurricane Harvey will help us better fulfill our mission to serve and comfort those who are in desperate need,” said Food For The Poor Executive Director Angel Aloma. “Our core work remains in developing countries where there are no safety nets, but this will allow us to serve our brothers and sisters in Texas who are hurting.”
Hurricane Harvey made landfall Friday evening just north of Corpus Christi, Texas, as a Category 4 storm with winds of 130 mph. The record-breaking storm dumped devastating amounts of rain in Houston, the nation’s fourth-largest city, causing catastrophic floods. Federal officials have said that more than 450,000 people are likely to seek federal aid to recover from Harvey.
Food For The Poor, one of the largest international relief and development organizations in the nation, does much more than feed millions of the hungry poor primarily in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. This interdenominational Christian ministry provides emergency relief assistance, clean water, medicines, educational materials, homes, support for orphans and the aged, skills training and micro-enterprise development assistance. Over the last 10 years, fundraising and other administrative costs averaged less than 5% of our expenses; more than 95% of all donations went directly to programs that help the poor.
