Food For The Poor Reopens Port-au-Prince Feeding Center
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Jan. 18, 2010) – As of today, Food For The Poor is serving hot meals again at its main feeding center in Port-au-Prince. (See photo taken yesterday below, for more photos click here) Ordinarily, the center provides 15,000 meals of rice, beans, and stew each day and the goal is to double that amount over the next day or two. At the same time, Food For The Poor teams are taking in additional food, medical and building supplies into Haiti across the Dominican Republic border.
“Every minute we are trying to take the next step to meet the needs of these people who are suffering beyond what we can imagine,” said Robin Mahfood, President/CEO of Food For The Poor. “Being able to provide these hot meals will literally save lives at this point.”
Containers of medical equipment, water, food, and tents are being shipped to Cap-Haitien, in the north part of Haiti, and to Santo Domingo. Food For The Poor teams are escorting the goods, which will be distributed as soon as they reach Port-au-Prince. This is in addition to water and medical supplies that were flown in over the weekend.
Food For The Poor Executive Director Angel Aloma will travel to Haiti midweek to support the Haiti staff and further coordinate communications.
“My heart breaks for that country, and I am eager to be on the ground and be with our staff, as well as with the people of Haiti,” Aloma said. “They need our undivided attention as they begin to recover from this horrific natural disaster.”
The Florida-based charity is collecting cash donations at www.foodforthepoor.org/haitiquake and 1-800-487-1158, as well as canned fish, canned meat, canned milk, water and canned baby formula at its headquarters at 6401 Lyons Road, Coconut Creek, Fla., 33073. The charity cannot accept clothing.
The goods are part of Food For The Poor’s initial goal to provide $5 million in relief to the struggling nation, as it recovers from one of the worst natural disasters in its history.
