COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Aug. 6, 2013) – Thanks to the generosity of the Office Depot Foundation, the international relief and development organization Food For The Poor will be able to provide 5,000 sackpacks for the children in its Angels Of Hope program in nine countries.
“Many of the children we encounter have no personal possessions. They have to share shoes and clothing with their siblings. They have never received a Christmas or birthday gift, or any other kind of gift for that matter. To receive a beautiful sackpack filled with basic school supplies is a blessing beyond their wildest dreams,” said Food For The Poor Executive Director Angel Aloma at the sackpack distribution event in Fort Lauderdale, which featured the award-winning host of “America’s Got Talent” Nick Cannon.
“These sackpacks are a tangible chance at dignity, success and hope for the future for these children,” Aloma said. “The impact cannot truly be measured or captured, but if we could, the children’s joy and gratitude for this beautiful donation would be able to fill all Office Depot stores and warehouses in the country.”
Through the Angels Of Hope program, caring donors to Food For The Poor have sponsored approximately 3,900 children in 117 homes, which are dedicated to serving orphaned, abandoned, abused and malnourished children.
This is the second year that Food For The Poor has received sackpacks from the Office Depot Foundation. The sackpacks, which include essential school supplies, will be distributed in the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua and Trinidad.
“The fact that this partnership helps to extend the impact of the program internationally is exceptionally gratifying. We are committed to helping children succeed in school wherever they may be,” said Mary Wong, President of the Office Depot Foundation. “We are thrilled to know that we will reach our 3 millionth child this year through the National Backpack Program and are proud to collaborate with Food For The Poor as we celebrate this milestone.”

Food For The Poor, named by The Chronicle of Philanthropy as the largest international relief and development organization in the nation, does much more than feed millions of the hungry poor in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America.
