#GivingTuesday: 48 Homes in 48 Hours: This Holiday Season, Help Food For The Poor Build Homes for the Poor
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Nov. 21, 2019) Food For The Poor’s #GivingTuesday fundraising goal is to raise enough funds to build 48 homes in 48 hours for destitute families in the countries where the charity serves.
#GivingTuesday is one way to help the charity to build two-bedroom homes for desperately poor families like Johana’s and her four young children. The family’s home in Santa Bárbara, Honduras, is a hodgepodge of scrap metal, wood and plastic. Their home floods when it rains, and when it isn’t raining, the family has to fight off rats that steal food they manage to gather.
“The rats come and eat the food, it’s every night and I haven’t found a way to stop them,” Johana said. “It’s been raining and it’s cold. When it rains, the children get sick a lot.”
Johana’s children appear to be healthy, but they are weak and are constantly ill with fevers or colds due to constant exposure in a wet and damp environment, which is their home.
“When you give a gift of a home on #GivingTuesday you will be making a life-transforming donation for families like Johana’s,” said Food For The Poor Executive Director Angel Aloma. “The day after Thanksgiving and the few weeks before Christmas are considered the height of the holiday shopping season, but it’s also a great time to tap into the power of #GivingTuesday and celebrate the holidays through philanthropy.”
Food For The Poor joined the #GivingTuesday global movement eight years ago to bring awareness to the plight of poor. Through a matching-gift challenge, donations that Food For The Poor receives toward housing, up to $750,000 by midnight on December 3, will be doubled. Founded in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y, a community and cultural center in New York City, #GivingTuesday is recognized on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. It is a day set aside to inspire people to collaborate to improve their communities and support the causes they believe in.
