48 Homes in 48 Hours: Food For The Poor Sets Goal for #GivingTuesday
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Nov. 19, 2018) On Nov. 27, Food For The Poor’s #GivingTuesday fundraising goal will be to raise enough funds to build 48 homes in 48 hours for poor families in the countries where the charity serves.
Your support on #GivingTuesday will help families like Nadine and her four young children to have a safe and sturdy home. The family’s small shack near Cap Haitien, Haiti, nearly washed away in the flood waters from a nearby river. The family is terrified when it rains because the remaining mud-and-stick structure is on the verge of collapse.
“The children have been crying all day because they are hungry and I have no money to buy food,” Nadine said. “They don’t even have shoes because they lost everything in the storm, and people outside can see inside, so I don’t feel safe in here.”
Food For The Poor joined the #GivingTuesday global movement seven years ago to bring awareness to the plight of families like Nadine’s, and to share ideas on how you can make a positive impact during the holiday season.
“Many families in the countries where we serve are in dire need of a secure home,” said Food For The Poor Executive Director Angel Aloma. “That reality is the reason we have decided to double the number of homes during the annual fundraiser from 24 to 48. When you give a gift of a home, your gift will be matched dollar for dollar up to $500,000 on #GivingTuesday.”
Recognized on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, it’s a day set aside to inspire people to collaborate to improve their communities and support the causes in which they believe. Founded in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y, a community and cultural center in New York City, #GivingTuesday has inspired millions.
“We understand that this year is especially challenging due to the natural disasters impacting parts of the United States, so it’s very important for us as we prepare for this annual day of giving to give thanks to God and to our donors for their dedication and generosity,” Aloma said.
