A New School for Gressier, Thanks to Chicago Couple’s Commitment to Haiti
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Sept. 20, 2016) Life for 142 schoolchildren in Gressier, Haiti, is about to change. Thanks to the nearly 200 guests who attended the 11th Annual Dreams, Past & Present Event in Hoffman Estates, Ill., the goal to fund a new primary school was reached.
The new school will ease overcrowding and provide a suitable learning environment for the students. The construction of the Institution Star Academy will be a two-phased project and will begin later this fall as part of the Alpha Village Relocation Project in Gressier.
The big moment of the evening was the presentation of this year’s Good and Faithful Servant Award to Jim and Jan Dobbs by Fr. Medard Laz. Through Food For The Poor, the Dobbs have installed 24 water wells across Haiti where the wells are supplying more than 42,000 people each day with fresh water. Another highlight was the presentation of beautiful glass keepsakes to the hosts of the 11th Annual Dreams Past & Present event. Executive Director of Food For The Poor, Angel Aloma, presented Fr. Medard Laz, and Andrew and Florette Sokulski with the gifts from the charity after expressing deep gratitude for their years of commitment.
“Thousands of lives in Haiti have been touched by the generosity of Andrew and Florette Sokulski, Fr. Laz, and the dedicated donors in the state of Illinois,” said Aloma. “Because of their loving kindness the Bernard Mevs Hospital in Port-au-Prince has received updated medical equipment, new recovery rooms, and much needed medical supplies in honor of their daughter Julie Sokulski Hesser, who died more than a decade ago. Now, schoolchildren in Haiti soon will have an opportunity to attend school in a safe and secure building. Thank you.”
