Food For The Poor Zooms into the Future of Fundraising: Charity Hosts Online Event for New School in Haiti
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Sept. 1, 2020) A devoted supporter of Food For The Poor is hoping that virtual fundraising will be a blessing in disguise and allow even more people to learn about the dire need of students in Haiti and be moved to do something about it.
Event Chairman Fr. Medard Laz, a FFTP supporter for nearly two decades, is passionate about Haiti and giving back. Over the years, he has helped to fund homes, community centers, clinics and schools through FFTP. Fr. Laz is counting on the Building Dreams virtual event on Sept. 10 to build a much-needed school in Milot, Bonnet à l’Evêque, Haiti.
“The people in Haiti are my neighbors who live only 705 miles away from me in Fort Lauderdale,” Fr. Laz said. “I daily think about my nearby neighbors who are starving, do not have clean water, homes, schools or a decent living. Their situation shouts out to me to help them.”
“My vision for the Building Dreams event is that more people will find out about what we are doing in Haiti and want to help,” Fr. Laz continued. “Most of our supporters are older adults who I hope will contact their children and their grandchildren to participate.”
Milot is a community of around 10,000 people and is located 12 miles south of Cap-Haitien. Ecole Claire Heureuse de Milot is a tuition-free school of nearly 200 students, seven teachers and six staff. The school is cramped and crumbling, which makes the building a dangerous place to learn, especially when it rains. To accommodate the overflow of students, some classes are held outside.
Funds from Building Dreams will be used to build a nine-classroom school, a cafeteria, an eight-stall sanitation block, four solar-powered streetlamps and a 6,500-gallon reservoir for clean water. The school also will be used for adult literacy and vocational training.
“One of the best gifts to give is an opportunity for an education, which is one of the first steps in breaking the cycle of poverty,” said Angel Aloma, Food For The Poor EVP & Chief Marketing Officer. “The need in Haiti is greater than ever and this pandemic has worsened the situation for families living with little to nothing. It’s especially difficult for the children. We thank Fr. Laz for being a loyal champion of Haiti and for his passion to give children a good education in the community of Milot.”
