Palm Beach County Second-Grader Plans a “Hope Walk for Homes”
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Oct. 30, 2015) – On Nov. 7, 2015 a Lake Worth community will become the location for the first annual Hope Walk for Homes. The 2.5-mile walk, bike or run fundraiser is the idea of 7-year-old Christopher Evans, who will donate the proceeds to Food For The Poor to build homes for destitute families in Haiti.
Christopher, a second-grader, learned about the needs in the Caribbean country from his mother, a teacher at Palm Beach Day Academy, where he is a student.
“I am trying to raise money to help build a home for a family in La Fosse, Haiti. I am hoping you will consider donating money to Food for the Poor,” said Christopher. “Together we can build homes for little boys and girls that are just like me, but live in a place with fewer resources.”
Christopher’s interest in Haiti was sparked after his mother, Sarah Evans, traveled there with Food For The Poor in March. Evans delivered shoes and school supplies collected by her students to a school in Haiti. On that trip, Evans learned about the needs in La Fosse. She shared her experiences with her family, which made an impact on young Christopher. For a look at the March mission trip visit: www.FoodForThePoor.org/academy.
“When I returned from my visit to Haiti I shared stories and pictures of the desperate need and how Food For The Poor helps to empower families. That’s when Christopher said to me, ‘Mommy, we have to do something to help. I cannot be happy when I see people sad,’ so we organized a plan to sell organic lemonade as his first fundraiser and later the walk,” said Evans.
Christopher’s first project included setting up lemonade stands and making posters to spread the word about his mission to neighbors and parishioners at church. With the support of family, friends and private donations, he raised enough money to build a house. Now he’s hoping for the same kind of support for his upcoming Hope Walk for Homes. His goal is to build a second home for a family in need.
“It’s humbling and heartwarming when a child, who is only 7 years old, has genuine compassion about the less fortunate in the world. What Christopher is doing will make a lasting impact on these families in La Fosse, Haiti, for the next generation to come. We wish him God’s blessings and much success,” said Angel Aloma, Executive Director of Food For The Poor.
The location of the 2.5-mile Hope Walk for Homes is the Lakes of Sherbrooke Clubhouse, 8130 Havasu Ct. Lake Worth, Fla., 33467 on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 8 a.m. The entry fee is a donation of any amount on the day of the event. Participants are encouraged to pre-register at www.FoodForThePoor.org/christopher.
