Taiwan ICDF Visits Food For The Poor
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (May 20, 2019) Today, top officials from the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) and Food For The Poor committed to continue working together to find better solutions to lift families out of poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The guests toured Food For The Poor’s headquarters in Coconut Creek and discussed the potential for future joint projects.
Deputy Secretary General Alex L. J. Shyy was joined by Professor Wei-Wen Chang of the National Taiwan Normal University and a director on the Taiwan ICDF’s Board of Directors; Shu-Hao Yeh, Division Chief of Latin America and the Caribbean; and Adolfo Sun, Vice Consul of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Miami.
The leaders followed the tradition of exchanging symbolic gifts between the organizations.
“We want to express our long-term appreciation and gratitude to Food For The Poor. We look forward to making the level of cooperation between us even better,” Shyy said.
“We are very proud to be associated with Taiwan. We feel as if we are family,” said Food For The Poor President/CEO Robin Mahfood. “There is a lot of good work to be done in the future.”
The enduring partnership of Food For The Poor and Taiwan ICDF goes back more than 10 years, making the development of agricultural, aquaculture and animal husbandry projects a reality for the destitute and a stepping-stone out of poverty.
Over the years, the two entities have cooperated on numerous projects, from outfitting schools and orphanages in Haiti with more than 1,000 computer work stations, to planting 2,800 papaya trees in Chacraseca, Nicaragua, and developing aquaculture and animal husbandry projects in Honduras that help make the poor self-sufficient.
“When we think of the Taiwan ICDF, we think of expertise. Food For The Poor would like to tap into that expertise to help our projects achieve that next level of efficiency,” said Food For The Poor Executive Vice President Ed Raine. “We have this great relationship. We want to make it even stronger. It’s all about how we can do more together to raise people out of poverty.”
In cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of China (Taiwan) continues to provide rice to Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere. This year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is sending 6,100 metric tons of rice in seven shipments – equal to 13.4 million pounds.
The donation will provide 53 million meals for thousands of children and adults in the most destitute areas of the country.
Food For The Poor will distribute the rice to sponsored programs, one of which is the charity’s feeding center in Port-au-Prince. Approximately 15,000 hot meals are cooked and distributed from this location six days a week.
The Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund serves as Taiwan’s dedicated international development and cooperation organization, focused on boosting socio-economic development, enhancing human resources and promoting economic relations in a range of developing partner countries. The Taiwan ICDF shares Taiwan’s development experience with partner countries, and assists developing nations in their efforts to become self-reliant, enabling them to emerge from poverty.
