Snapshots of Haiti

Recently, staffer April S. joined Food For The Poor colleagues visiting needy families in various parts of Haiti. The group was also there to check in on communities that have been beneficiaries of Food For The Poor support, such as Olivier, where 50 families received homes in 2012 from generous donors.

April shares her iPhone photos and observations as seen on the road:

Overlooking Lake Azuéi: We took a dusty, bumpy road to visit communities alongside the lake, which is located about 30 miles east of Port-au-Prince; along Haiti’s eastern border with the Dominican Republic.

All Aboard: We often saw people uncomfortably packed into, and even on top of, cargo trucks. This loaded truck was spotted heading east on Route National #1, just below Cabaret.

The Hills: Homes crowd the hills in and around Port-au-Prince. This city is similar in size to Coconut Creek, which is home to Food For The Poor’s headquarters. However, with a population of nearly 3 million, Port-au-Prince has about 55 times as many people. An estimated 10 million people live in Haiti, and the population is expected to climb to 15.7 million by 2050.
