Political Instability

Ecuador's political landscape is highly fragmented, with numerous parties often leading to coalition governments. This fragmentation makes it challenging to implement coherent policies. Furthermore, Ecuador's economy is highly dependent on oil exports, making it vulnerable to fluctuations in global oil prices. Recent economic downturns have exacerbated strained government finances and limited its ability to implement any coherent policy.

Natural disasters

Natural disasters

Ecuador faces a range of natural disasters due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire and its varied terrain. Earthquakes are common, while volcanic eruptions, especially from Cotopaxi and Tungurahua, bring ashfall and mudflows. Seasonal flooding and landslides, exacerbated by heavy rainfall, add to the challenges. These disasters displace people, damage infrastructure, and worsen economic hardship. Strong preparedness and response plans are vital to protect communities from these recurring hazards.

Food insecurity

Climate change has had a profound impact on Ecuador's agricultural productivity. Severe weather events such as droughts, heavy rains, and landslides have disrupted food production, particularly affecting seed germination and crop yields. Ecuador also faces nutritional challenges, with high rates of chronic malnutrition, especially among children. The country has the second-highest percentage of chronic malnutrition in children under five in Latin America. Indigenous communities are particularly hard-hit.

ECUADOR OPERATIONS HIGHLIGHTS

2023

  • Water: In a humanitarian effort to address the devastating impact of the floods that destroyed the water supply in Esmeraldas' Carlos Concha community, Food For The Poor delivered supplies and pumping equipment to restore safe drinking water to 1,000 residents, connecting 185 homes to the restored water system. In Las Queseras, 840 community members from 168 families now have access to reliable and safe drinking water thanks to a project that included the installation of reserve and storage tanks, distribution network pipes, a chlorine system for water purification, micro-home meters, and capacity building for the community's Water Board Committee
  • Micro-Enterprise: In collaboration with CODESPA, a new project aims to increase income and food security by 15% for 200 families of small milk and alpaca wool producers in Sacha and Cumbijín communities, Cotopaxi Province. The initiative focuses on capacity building, water access improvement, climate-smart livestock training, and agricultural practices. It also covers product diversification, business management, marketing, commercial agreements with the private sector, and microcredit access. Scheduled for completion in two years.
  • Water: The Visote-Nueva Esperanza potable water project, completed over a year ago in collaboration with the Legado Foundation, is still successfully providing disinfected drinking water. This water has proven to be crucial in reducing malnutrition rates among children in the community.

2022

  • Malnutrition: Food For The Poor has partnered with Legado Foundation to address chronic childhood malnutrition in the community of Visote-Nueva Esperanza by ensuring consistent access to clean water.
