Taiwan ICDF recognized by Food For The Poor for their dedication to humanitarian aid

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (December 23, 2008) – Food For The Poor recognized the government of Taiwan, through their International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF), for their outstanding humanitarian commitment and partnership in the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras and Nicaragua.

Food For The Poor’s management met with Taiwan Ambassador Lien-gene Chen and his delegation on Tuesday, Dec. 16, to express their sincere gratitude. The partnership between Food For The Poor and the Taiwan ICDF has made the development of agricultural, aquaculture and animal husbandry projects a reality for the destitute and a stepping-stone out of poverty. During the visit, the distinguished guests toured Food For The Poor’s headquarters in Coconut Creek, and discussed future joint project plans.

“I would like to express a genuine, heartfelt thank you to the people of Taiwan and the ICDF for their deep concern for the destitute,” said Food For The Poor’s President/CEO, Robin Mahfood. “The monthly gift of 40 containers of rice to Haiti has been a godsend to the poor. The gift has enabled Food For The Poor to continue feeding an ever-increasing number of Haitians who are suffering with hunger daily – through the tumultuous world food crisis and 2008 hurricane season.”

In cooperation with Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ICDF has provided rice to the island nation of Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere, for the past three years. Shipments have increased annually, with 40 containers being provided monthly throughout 2008. The monthly donation of 800 tons of rice, which translates to 7 million generous servings, feeds hundreds of thousands of school children and adults in the most destitute areas of Haiti. With over 80% of the population already living in poverty, the worldwide food price increases, coupled with the four devastating tropical storms of 2008, have significantly increased the needs of the people
