Atlanta residents plant Seeds of Hope
ATLANTA, Ga.(September 25, 2009) – At the second annual Food For The Poor Atlanta event, supporters planted Seeds of Hope for the people of Haiti by filling a W Atlanta – Buckhead ballroom to capacity. Proceeds will transform lives and establish a Food For The Poor fishing village in the small coastal village of Marigot, Haiti.
“The ocean that separates us can also bring us together in a very meaningful way,” said Lynn Hanna, Event Chairwoman. “The waters off Haiti’s coasts are teeming with fish, an abundant and nutritious source of food for Haiti’s hungry population, but most Haitians are too poor to afford seaworthy boats, engines and the equipment to reach this natural resource.”
The fishing village in Marigot will provide destitute families with a self-sustaining source of income and food. Project plans include 15 double-unit houses, a sanitation block, access to clean drinking water, 60 fruit trees, three solar panel lights, four 22-foot fiberglass boats with outboard engines, global positioning systems (GPS), gear sheds, freezers, training, and safety and fishing equipment.
Master of ceremonies, Atlanta’s 104.7 FM The FISH morning team hosts Kevin Avery and Taylor Scott, endorsed Food For The Poor’s work and shared what they have seen, heard, and felt on mission trips to Jamaica and Haiti.
Principal sponsors, W Atlanta – Buckhead and renowned restaurant MARKET, prepared an elegant dining experience for guests, featuring Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s contemporary cuisine. The evening included live music and dancing. Silent auction prizes enticed guests to purchase exclusive art and collectibles from the Caribbean and Latin America, as well as designer jewelry, vacations, golf packages and more.
