Food For The Poor Joins Broward County Public Schools to Donate Bahamas Relief Items
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Nov. 7, 2019) Food For The Poor joined Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) and its partners in their campaign to collect and donate critically needed relief supplies to families still in need of basic necessities two months after Hurricane Dorian devastated Grand Bahama and the Abaco islands.
Food For The Poor loaded four 40-foot shipping containers on Monday morning at the District’s warehouse in Oakland Park with items donated by District staff, students, parents and community supporters. The containers are on their way to the Bahamas to help families.
The BCPS donation drive was a collaboration with the Broward Education Foundation, United Way of Broward County and BrightStar Credit Union. Food, water, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene items were among the supplies donated.
Hurricane Dorian struck the Bahamas on Sept. 1 and 2. Since then, Food For The Poor has shipped 25 containers of aid to the islands.
“We are extremely grateful to the Broward County Public Schools and all who made this generous donation possible,” said Food For The Poor President/CEO Robin Mahfood. “This aid will bring much-needed relief to our suffering neighbors in the Bahamas.”
The relationship between Food For The Poor and Broward County Public Schools goes back to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti when the schools collected more than 600 pallets of relief supplies for the charity and earthquake victims.
In 2016, Broward Schools donated 25 pallets of relief goods to Food For The Poor to help families in Haiti who were suffering from Hurricane Matthew.
“Once again, our friends at Food For The Poor put their hands and feet where all our hearts and minds are,” said Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “They reached out to our neighbors in the Bahamas to help those who are still suffering after the tragedy.”
