David and Patricia Wallace to be Honored at Building Hope Gala
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Jan. 17, 2017) Food For The Poor has been blessed over the years with many compassionate donors who have joined the charity in giving a voice to the millions of poor who are not heard.
Among those generous donors are David and Patricia Wallace of Boca Raton, who believe in the responsibility and importance of giving back.
The Wallaces will be honored with the Lifetime of Giving Award at Food For The Poor’s 22nd Annual Building Hope Gala on Feb. 4 at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, 501 E. Camino Real, Boca Raton, Fla.
Attendees will be invited to create a legacy of compassion by pledging to build 50 critically needed houses in Boen, Haiti. The area is in Ganthier on a flat dirt plain, where 90 percent of the residents survive on less than $1 per day and live in disintegrating mud huts that offer no protection from the elements.
“Food For The Poor has helped so many families and communities in great need throughout the Caribbean and Latin America by providing food, housing, emergency relief and spiritual support, and we feel blessed to be able to give back and make an impact on so many lives by supporting this charity,” said David Wallace.
“It’s been an honor for us to be donors to Food For The Poor over the years and we are certainly humbled to receive the Lifetime of Giving Award,” said Patricia Wallace, who is a member of the Building Hope Gala event committee, and noted that she and her husband were married at the Boca Raton Resort & Club 13 years ago.
The Wallaces first heard of Food For The Poor 18 years ago.
“After attending our first gala, we were so impressed with the work of the charity and the impact that it makes, that we have proudly been donors ever since,” said David Wallace.
The Building Hope Gala will celebrate Food For The Poor’s 35 years of dedicated service to the poor. The international relief and development organization, which started serving Jamaica in 1982, is now transforming the lives of the destitute primarily in 17 countries throughout the Caribbean and Latin America.
“The gift of a safe, secure home is a tremendous blessing for a family who lives in a crumbling one-room shack, and does not know where they will get their next meal,” said Food For The Poor President/CEO Robin Mahfood. “A home offers more than shelter to a destitute family – it offers hope.”
In 1995, Food For The Poor began a housing program in Haiti and started building homes in Cite Soleil. Since then, 25,806 housing units have been built in Haiti, more than 14,000 of them since the earthquake in January 2010. These sturdy homes provide the poor with shelter, safety and hope for the future. A gift of $3,600 will move a destitute family from their dirt-floor makeshift shack in Boen into a permanent home.
At the Building Hope Gala, attendees will be able to bid on silent auction prizes, such as electronics, jewelry, vacations, golf and dining packages, and a rooftop experience at Wrigley Field, home of the 2016 World Series champions the Chicago Cubs.
