One Event, 10 Million Meals: FFTP’s We Are One Sets Ambitious Goal to Feed Starving Families
COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (Aug. 30, 2023) – As families in the Caribbean and Latin America face rising food insecurity, Food For The Poor’s fourth annual National Celebration – We Are One aims to raise enough funds to provide 10 million meals.
The virtual event will be livestreamed from the charity’s Coconut Creek headquarters at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28.
Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Laura Story will perform for the event.
For many poverty-stricken families in the countries served by FFTP, the ripple effects of rising inflation, global conflicts and climate change have inflicted even greater hardships, leaving many who were already vulnerable facing something even much worse.
In Haiti, 4.9 million people – nearly half of the country’s population – are experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity, according to a United Nations report.
Last October, hunger conditions usually associated with war-torn nations were recorded in Cité Soleil in Port-au-Prince for the first time in the Caribbean and Latin America. Earthquakes and severe flooding in June only exacerbated the hunger crisis in Haiti, which has been embroiled in brutal gang violence since the assassination of its then president, Jovenel Moïse, in July 2021.
Story, a six-time GMA Dove Award winner, has shared how faith has helped her through adversity.
“My journey has been one in which God has shown up,” Story said in an article published on LancasterOnline in Lancaster, Pa.
Story’s husband, Martin Evington, was diagnosed with a brain tumor, not long after the couple moved from South Carolina to Johns Creek, Ga., so Story could take on a leader position at Perimeter Church. The couple found strength in their new community.
Her song “Blessings,” for which she won Top Christian Song in the 2012 Billboard Music Awards, was written as a testimony and reminder that God remains faithful even when things turn out differently than our expectations.
FFTP President/CEO Ed Raine expressed his gratitude to Story for accepting the invitation to help families who face extraordinary challenges and dire hunger.
Raine also thanked the charity’s donors for continuing to provide hope for families living in poverty.
“The lifesaving meals our donors are providing are an answer to the prayers of mothers and fathers who hear the cries of their hungry children,” Raine said. “The need for food is as great as it’s ever been. We know more needs to be done. Thank you to everyone for helping us provide a helping hand.”
Thanks to a special gift-matching challenge, every dollar donated will be matched with a dollar’s worth of food, making donors’ gifts go even further.
